It's been a week since I finished and I'm still thinking about this book and it's characters. The book is unlike other Rowling books and in a different style than most authors dare to attempt. There is no main character. Her depth of character development for each person in the story had me mesmerized. The authors observations of complex people and her ability to be empathetic enough to understand and create logical thought patterns for all sorts of people made me wonder at her people watching skills. To create so many actions and reactions around a single event for so many characters with so many different life experiences and views would almost seem to require psychological training. I had some disappointment in the turn the story took, but only because I'm used to the sappy happy ending. This is an incredible accomplishment of a book and I'm amazed at it's author's daring.

I had read the first chapter of the The Sorcerer’s Stone in 1997 and decided that it would be great for my 9-year-old daughter but just not my cuppa Amortentia — a most Confusing Concoction, indeed! I had become a confirmed Muggle (not a fan).

21 years later, Rowling has risen to #1 in my list of modern authors—ahead of my erstwhile fave, Stephen King!

Her eloquent and elegant depiction of modern sociopolitical life in a small English township stole my literary heart! She channels my favorite author of all time — Catherine Ann Porter. Hmmmm— Porter . . . Potter . . . perhaps there IS a psychic connection here!

I’ll now consume all of Rowling’s post-Potter repertoire and maybe—just maybe—revisit Hogwarts Station. Thank you, JKR, for making my a better refuge than ever!
I won't lie, most books by JK Rowling I find really hard to follow in the beginning. This was no exception. I found myself reading, flipping back to the previous page to try and remember who is being introduced. Once the introductions were over and I was done trying to remember who's family was who's, I really started to enjoy the book and was eagerly waiting to see what happened next. I loved all of the intricacies of the stories and how characters I thought I wouldn't care to pay attention to, really evolved and developed a good narrative. So while the beginning was a bit of a headache for me, I definitely don't regret starting this book.
Causal Vacancy incites all sorts of reactions, and my friends, like the public, are severely divided on the merits of J.K. Rowling's departure from the world of wizarding magic. Unlike the Potter series, Vacancy is written for adults and deals with the kind of political wrangling we so often see in the news. The characters are all flawed, as is humanity. Some are seriously ill, mentally or physically. Some are well off; others are poor, living in deplorable conditions. Rowling's cast is varied and large; it isn't always easy to keep track of them, and most aren't likable enough for readers to form sentimental attachments to them. However, they are all rounded and real. So real, in fact, that it's easy to see them in one's mind's eye, to know they are people who might be on any street in any neighborhood.

Rowling's ability to turn a phrase, to use descriptive language as a painter uses brushstrokes is brilliant. Picturing Pagford, the country, the locations, the homes, the people is child's play with the minute detail she provides. In fact, even the smells are nearly up one's nose as the pages come alive, element by striking element.

It's true that there is no gripping action, nothing to rivet one who wants movement and excitement. However, if a person is looking for a well-written piece of literature, this will surely meet expectations. Compared to other classic writers, Hemingway, Orwell, Salinger, Rowling can stand in the queue. The book actually held my rapt attention because of the talent Rowling displays.
J K Rowling is a master at creating worlds on the page that are so solid, compelling and truthful that the reader is fully transported to and immersed in them. With The Casual Vacancy, she has, once again, proved that very few authors can touch her astounding ability at doing just that. Brutal in its realistic depiction of a small town and those who inhabit it, Rowling draws such fine, full, searing portraits of her characters. Though at first, those portraits seem cold and harsh, Rowling infuses her characters with deeply touching (if also infuriating and disturbing) humanness. One gets the sense that she knows these people intimately, and loves them despite their appalling failings and cowardice. As a reader, I was shocked and disgusted by behavior that I hope I would myself never engage in, by thoughts I hope I myself would never entertain. By sketching these people and their failings so fully and honestly, though, Rowling forces us, though we might pass judgement on the inhabitants of Pagford and Yarvil, to confront the bits of ourselves that are familiar in these people.
Rowling's genius is that she is able to intricately interweave the lives of so many characters, that she can create so many incredibly full portraits, and that we desperately care about what happens to them, despite not liking many of them very much. One wonders if her own experiences before she became "J K Rowling, Author", and the work she's done with the disadvantaged, colored her bleak but ultimately forgiving and redemptive philosophy towards class, society and moral responsibility at its most basic level in this novel.
Well that was depressing! The whining of an entire cast of selfish, small minded, unlikable characters fills the nine hours it takes to read this over long novel. The only possibly likeable character dies in the first few pages and yet even he is a typically naive bleeding heart who spends all his time trying to save the unsaveable while ignoring his own wife and children. I kept reading, hoping for a positive message in the end. It never came. Krystal and Robbie were always going to be victims. Rowling should stick to Harry Potter. She does fantasy far better than harsh reality.
